WHAT IS prom?

The art collective Prom emerged in the Fall of 2017 as a collaboration project between four artists: Marcos G. Morquecho (visual & sonic artist), Federico Pozuelo (visual artist), Javier R. del Río (anthropologist & visual artist), and Martin A. Alonso (visual artist).

history of the stichting

The art collective Prom emerged in the Fall of 2017 as a collaboration project between four artists: Marcos G. Morquecho (visual & sonic artist), Federico Pozuelo (visual artist), Javier R. del Río (anthropologist & visual artist), and Martin A. Alonso (visual artist).

Their first work was the web-series Orientation-Induction-Launch for Radial Gallery, curated by Débora Levy and produced in Amsterdam, in collaboration with the performer Valerie Taejeong Lee Jung.

After this inaugural project, they started a dynamic of collective work that would grow in the following years. Since then, they have been developing other audiovisual and editorial projects. In 2019 they published the first issue of their editorial project Prom.run. In that year, they also established their headquarters in the art residency WOW Lieven in Amsterdam.

two crucial realisations

The art collective had two crucial realisations: For one, their activity would consist mainly of multimedia and publishing projects. In the former, they would explore the expressive and symbolic possibilities of the artistic medium. Additionally, they would use the magazine to communicate the ideas at stake in their investigations in a much more straightforward fashion.

The second realisation was that the art collective needed a legal structure if they intended to professionalise. Thus, in 2020 the artists of Prom decided to contact Barbara Krulik, Alexander Weiss, and Albert Mateu to create the Stichting Prom Art Collective.

In this sense, the stichting came into being to fund the collective Prom’s non-profit art projects. With this goal in mind, it intends to nourish the cultural activity in the Netherlands by creating a yearly cultural program that will include including art shows, film screenings, and other cultural manifestations.

strategy

The Stichting Prom Art Collective aims to fund the non-profit artistic activities of the art collective Prom. These activities can consist of, but are not limited to being: audiovisual productions, editorial projects, art installations, and the creation of events organized to make the aforementioned artworks available to the public.

To pursue its goals, the Stichting Prom Art Collective organizes its activity through a yearly program. Each cycle follows a similar structure: In the beginning, the artists at the collective Prom present an annual plan and a budget for creation and research to the stiching’s board for approval.

The plan’s content is topic-oriented, meaning that all the projects and activities for the year address a central theme from different angles. There are three main fields which that we will pay special attention to:

(1) Art-production or other forms of art-making. (i.e. audiovisual productions, multimedia experiments, and the installation of such projects in exhibition contexts). The output of these activities will always follow a cooperative dynamic with third parties in the cultural field. The result will not be distributed for commercial purposes.

(2) The publication of an issue for the magazine Prom.run. For now, these are published in English for the sake of connecting with an international audience. Moreover, the first two issues used text (essays and interviews) to provide background information about the themes explored in the artworks produced that year. The result will not be primarily designed for commercial purposes.

(3) The preparation of one or more events to present our works and present them to different audiences. We will pay particular attention to the range of scenes and forms of potential engagement with the local public.
